Collecting Silverware Storage ChestsSeasoned collectors of silver flatware have long coveted the quality and craftmanship of antique and vintage silverware chests. Additionally, storing a collection in a chest that may have originally held the pieces enhances the collection as well as the experience. Many collectors look for chests which have the original manufacturer labels intact and fit within the style and era their flatware was made.
Some collectors are more interested in the quality of the chest; a sturdy, period chest with dovetail corners which can be passed on for generations along with the silver it contains. Many chests produced today are made of pressed or simulated wood with glued or stapled corners.
We know of some collectors who collect flatware chests for decorating their homes and/or storing things other than flatware. This type of collector generally sticks with one style or era, such as art deco, or heart-shaped and other unique shapes not commonly found in either new or vintage chests.
A variety of vintage flatware chests can still be found today and there are just as many reasons why people want to own them. Some are made with lucite and other plastics. Others have hand-painted motifs, glass tops, and even legs, in traditional, modern, deco, and other styles and materials. Vintage silverware chests in very good to excellent original condition are the most desirable but, if you are handy, purchasing a chest that needs a little work is very economical.
