Full-relief insects adorned flatware and other silver items from about 1860 until 1900. These pieces are quite rare today and were not commonly produced even then. It is not known if these were production pieces or custom-ordered pieces. It has been suggested that they were intended to stimulate conversation. No doubt that a full-relief fly or other insect adorning the utensil with which you are being served would evoke a comment or two!
