Vintage Grape Pattern FlatwareGrape motifs were the rage during the period of about 1904-1908 and several grape flatware patterns were produced by various manufacturers. Vintage, introduced in 1904, was an instant success and is considered to be the grape pattern and extremely desirable among collectors. Moselle, introduced in 1906, is considered by many to be the most desirable silverplate pattern ever produced. Each design features embossed grape clusters, tendrils and leaves on both front and back of the handle and down into the bowl of the serving pieces. Some pieces in these patterns command much higher prices than many sterling silver patterns.
Forks, knives and other pieces with hollow handles, as well as serving pieces, are particularly beautiful and sought-after. Hollow handled items were originally more expensive than the solid handles so fewer were made. It is becoming increasingly difficult to locate pieces in good condition of either pattern. However, keep in mind that these two patterns are always in demand so it is economically feasible to have them resilvered if worn.
